One of the most visible alternative rock bands of the early '90s, the Smashing Pumpkins achieved mainstream success over the decade with the classic releases Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. Disavowing the punk rock roots of many of their alt rock contemporaries, they have a diverse, densely layered, and guitar-heavy sound, containing elements of gothic rock, heavy metal, dream pop, psychedelic rock, progressive rock, shoegazing, and, in later recordings, electronica. The direction of the band is dominated by lead guitarist, vocalist, keyboardist, bassist and principal songwriter Billy Corgan.
