Reel Big Fish gained mainstream recognition in the 1990s, during the third wave of ska with the release of the gold certified album Turn the Radio Off, when the single "Sell Out" became a modern rock radio and MTV favorite. They were distinguished by their hyperkinetic stage shows, juvenile humor, ironic covers of new wave pop songs, and metallic shards of ska punk.
