Blessed with an extensive range and perfect pitch, Freddie Mercury was one of the most charismatic and technically gifted rock singers of his generation, his larger-than-life reputation bolstered by a wry, outspoken sense of humor and an array of era-defining stage costumes. Through his legendary theatrical performances, Queen became one of the most popular bands in the world in the mid-'70s, topping the charts in England and regularly cracking the Billboard 200 Top Ten with albums like 1975's A Night at the Opera, featuring "Bohemian Rhapsody", 1976's A Day at the Races, and 1977's News of the World. In 1990, Queen received the Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music and they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001.
