Formed in Gainesville, Florida, in 1970, Mudcrutch were essentially a precursor to Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, with a then 17-year-old Tom Petty on bass, Mike Campbell and Tom Leadon on guitars, Benmont Tench on keyboards, and Randall Marsh on drums. They are best known for being the band that began Tom Petty's rise to fame. In 1970, Mudcrutch ambled out to Los Angeles but they fell apart not long afterward, never recording more than a handful of singles and demos. Most of the original Mudcrutch lineup reformed in 2007 to record their first album as a group, which was followed by a tour. A second album followed in 2016. Tom Petty's death in 2017 effectively dissolved the group again.
