Jefferson Airplane defined the San Francisco sound in the '60s, with the acid rock guitar playing of Jorma Kaukonen and the soaring twin vocals of Grace Slick and Marty Balin, scoring hit singles. They epitomized the hippie ethos as well as the antiwar political movement of their time, and their history was one of controversy along with hit records. They were headliners at the Monterey Pop Festival (1967), Woodstock (1969), Altamont Free Concert (1969), and the first Isle of Wight Festival (1968). Members of Jefferson Airplane regrouped as Jefferson Starship in 1974. Jefferson Airplane was presented with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016.
