Genesis emerged from Britain's prog-rock scene of the early 1970s fronted by Peter Gabriel, a singer with a flair for eccentric theatricality and a gift for melody. After Gabriel's departure, the band eventually evolved into a trio featuring keyboardist Tony Banks, guitarist Mike Rutherford, and Phil Collins, the drummer who doubled as the group's new lead vocalist. The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway is the sixth studio album by Genesis, released in 1974. The double album is a massive rock opera: the winding, wielding story of a Puerto Rican hustler name Rael making his way in New York City.
