British synth-pop band Bronski Beat was formed in 1983 in London. Bronski Beat achieved success in the mid-1980s, particularly with the 1984 single "Smalltown Boy". The song quickly established the trio as an outlet for gay issues and the follow-up single "Why?" pursued the same energetic and electronic formula musically, while the lyrics focussed more centrally and darkly on anti-gay prejudice.
